Unpopular opinion… family portraits are not the only photos you should have of yourself.

Now don’t get me wrong family photos are important to have and look back on. However, the reason that I say that is because I have been witness to and even been on the frontlines of these feelings as a mom. Becoming a mother is a blessing, but that doesn’t mean that we as women should just leave everything that makes us an individual in the dust. The first few years into motherhood are some of the hardest in the adjustment period and often the most challenging in navigating the core of who we are and who we become post baby.

We've all seen the social media posts - moms lamenting that family portraits are the only photos they have of themselves. I even came across a reel the other day that said “Family pictures are important to moms because often it’s the only ones they get.” That to me sounded just tragic and honestly depressing. While it's true that family photos are important, they shouldn't be the only images you have to commemorate your life.

As an experienced photographer at Infinite Horizons and mother myself, I've seen firsthand the joy and confidence that comes from having a diverse portfolio of personal photos. Whether it's a stylized portrait session, candid shots from a day out, and even a personally curated studio session, these images can serve as a visual diary of your life. Not only that be the confidence boost that you feel after a photoshoot is invaluable.

Think about it - family photos capture precious moments with your loved ones, but they don't necessarily reflect your individual style, interests, and personality. I know for me when I think about my life I don’t want to be remembered as just a “beloved mother”. The thought of having that on my tomb stone makes me cringe. I want my Family to remember every part of me as a person not just the part that was a mother.

This is why to me inesting in these photo sessions is so important. Maybe you've been wanting to try out a new fashion look or experiment with different makeup styles. A portrait session is the perfect opportunity to showcase your creativity and self-expression. Or perhaps you have a favorite outdoor spot that fills you with joy - a photo session there can immortalize that feeling. By investing in a variety of photographic experiences, you'll end up with a collection of images that truly tell your story.

The bottom line is, you deserve to have photos that make you feel confident, beautiful, and proud. Don't settle for just the family portraits - embrace the power of personal photography to celebrate the unique individual that you are.
