Posing For Awkward Couples Part I

Capturing love on camera is a beautiful experience, but not all couples feel comfortable in front of the lens. I know my first time in front of a professional photographer was for my engagement shoot and I was so nervous and unprepared! I know I am not the only one that felt awkward or self-conscious and I acknowledge that this can make it challenging to get those natural shots that truly showcase a couples connection. If you’re a couple who feels a bit out of place when it comes to posing, don’t worry! Here are some simple tips to help you feel more at ease and capture those genuine moments.

WHEN IN DOUBT MOVE!

One of the best ways to ease into a photoshoot is by incorporating movement. Walking hand in hand, dancing together, or even just swaying from side to side can help you forget about the camera and focus on each other. Movement adds a dynamic element to photos, making them feel more alive and less posed.

TIP:Try walking towards the camera, then away, holding hands. The simple act of walking can create a relaxed, natural look.

EMBRACE THE CLOSE UPS.

Sometimes, the best way to avoid awkwardness is to get close—really close! Embracing each other in a tight hug, or resting your foreheads together, can help you connect on a deeper level. These intimate poses can create a strong emotional impact and help you feel more comfortable.

TIP Try whispering something sweet (or funny) in your partner’s ear. This not only brings you closer physically but often leads to genuine smiles and laughter.

USE PROPS AND MOVE YOUR HANDS.

Using props and moving your hands is also a great way to make movement more natural. One of the things I get asked a lot is where do I put my hands? In this case using the surrounding environment to touch and find places to put your hands can be a great way to take the focus off posing and put it on interacting with each other and your surroundings. Whether it’s holding a bouquet, playing with you or you or your partners hair, even finding comfortable places to shift your hands can help you relax and act naturally.

TIP:If you’re at a beach, play with the sand or walk along the shoreline. In a park, sit on a blanket and have a mini picnic hold a glass, touch your hair. These simple activities can bring out your true personalities.

LAUGH!

Laughter is a universal remedy for awkwardness. A good laugh can break the ice and help you relax. Don’t be afraid to joke around or share a funny memory. Not only will this make the experience more enjoyable, but it will also lead to some genuine, joyful expressions. I find that whispering funny jokes in each others ears or doing subtle movements t o make your partner giggle and laugh can completely shift the vibe of a photo and the session from awkward to joyous.

TIP If you’re feeling particularly nervous, try a few silly poses first to get the nerves out. You might be surprised by how much fun you have, and these shots can turn out to be the most memorable.

TOUCH

Simple, gentle touches can create beautiful and tender moments on camera. Whether it’s holding hands, brushing your partner’s hair back, or placing your hand on their cheek, these small gestures can convey love and affection without the need for elaborate posing. This can also set the tone for a couple session especially when it comes to a more intimate and passionate sesion.

TIP Close your eyes and gently touch your partner’s face or hold their hand. This creates an intimate moment that looks natural and heartfelt, get close and whisper sweet somethings into each others ear. Touch her hair, caress a shoulder or hold an arm. Touch can be a powerful tool in posing!

FOCUS ON YOURSELVES AND NOT THE CAMERA

It’s easy to become overly aware of the camera, but the best photos come from focusing on your partner instead. Look at each other, talk to each other, and let the photographer capture those moments of connection. Aside from some guidance from the photographer try not to get too caught up in posing since this can create less natural movements.

TIP Pretend the camera isn’t there. Talk about your day, your plans, or even reminisce about your first date. The more you focus on each other, the more natural your poses will become.

BE IN TUNE WITH YOUR BODY

The most important tip of all is to be in tune with your body. I know that sounds silly! However, part of being in tune with your body is finding balance, and comfort. Posing doesn’t have to be technical and an easy way to avoid that is finding your center of balance and feeling comfortable. This is one of the best ways to capture authentic photos.  Don’t try to force poses that don’t feel right or imitate others. Your unique relationship and personalities are what make your photos special. Trust your photographer to guide you and capture the moments that truly represent who you are as a couple.

TIP Before the shoot, discuss your preferences and any concerns with your photographer. The more comfortable you are, the better your photos will turn out.

Posing for photos doesn’t have to be a daunting task, even if you’re an awkward couple. By focusing on movement, touch, and interaction, you can create beautiful, natural images that reflect your true connection. Remember, the best photos are the ones where you’re simply relaxed and having fun! So, follow these tips and let your love shine through!
